Doctor of Philosophy

The following materials are required for application to the Doctor of Philosophy degree program.

• Graduate application for the School of Nursing.
• $75 nonrefundable application fee.
• Official transcript(s) of all college coursework.
• A statement of career goals and research interests.
• References from three doctorally prepared individuals who are able to attest to the applicant's ability to engage in scholarly activity. At least one reference should be from the applicant's nursing program.
• Resume/Curriculum Vitae describing the applicant's educational and experiential background. (Instruction for Resume/Curriculum Vitae).
• Evidence of current registered nurse licensure in at least one state of the United States. Upon admission, students will need to meet additional licensure and participation requirements.

After an initial review by the Admissions Committee, certain candidates will be selected to progress to the next stage of the application process. These candidates will be contacted by email and asked to respond in writing to a specific set of questions.

A very short timeframe will be allowed for the receipt of the responses. Candidates will also be interviewed by the Ph.D. program faculty director and a research faculty member. The written responses and interview notes will be reviewed by the committee, and candidates will be informed of an admission decision as soon as possible.

Application Deadline

All applications must be received by the following deadline:

• Jan. 1, 2025, for the Summer 2025 semester
  

Admission decisions for each year are finalized approximately eight weeks after the application deadline. All applicants are notified of their admission status with mailed letters from the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.

Enrollment Deposit

To verify admission acceptance and secure enrollment, admitted graduate students must submit a $400 (non-refundable) enrollment deposit. This deposit is applied to the first semester's tuition and is not an additional fee.

NRSG 935 Professionalism and Scholarship Workshop: New Ph.D. students are required to attend this two-credit hour course, which serves as an introduction to the KU Ph.D. program and to doctoral study. The course meets in June on the KU Medical Center campus in Kansas City.
