Professional Background

Judith J. Warren, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, FACMI is Professor Emeritus of the University Kansas School of Nursing. While at the school she was the Christine A. Hartley Centennial Professor of Nursing, Director of Nursing Informatics in the KUMC Center for Health Informatics, Director of the Graduate Program of Health Informatics, and Assistant Director of the Frontiers Heartland Institute of Clinical and Translational Research's Center for Biomedical Informatics. She developed, in partnership with Cerner Corporation, the Simulated E-hEalth Delivery System (SEEDS), adapting electronic health record software, to teach students how to analyze data from virtual patient case studies, simulations, and clinical experiences while developing informatics competencies. She served as an adjunct professor in the School of Medicine in the Department of Biostatistics. She received the 2009 KU Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching, 2011 KUMC Nursing Alumni Award, the 2012 Virginia K. Saba National Award for Nursing Informatics, and the 2014 International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization's Excellence Award. In 2015, the University of Kansas Graduate Health Informatics Program established the Judith J Warren Informatics Excellence Student Award in her honor. Dr. Warren is a Fellow in both the American Academy of Nursing and the American College of Medical Informatics. 

Dr. Warren is a member of the Advisory Board for the National Center Data Repository for the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. She consulted with the National Database for Nursing Quality Indicators on evolution of their nursing quality indicators into eMeasures required by Meaningful Use. She served on the Quality Committee and Content Committee of the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization which develops SNOMED CT. She continues to be active on the Nursing Special Interest Group SNOMED CT and coauthors the Nursing problem List Subset of SNOMED CT, https://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/Snomed/nursing_problemlist_subset.html.  

Dr. Warren chairs the Board of Directors for the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) and is past chair of their Health Informatics Accreditation Council. She is a member of the planning committee for the Nursing Knowledge: Big Data Science Conference at the University of Minnesota. She is a former member of the DHHS National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics and served as co-chair of its Standards Subcommittee.
