Dean's Welcome Note
Hello! And welcome to the University of Kansas School of Nursing. I’m so glad you decided to learn more about us.
As a part of the University of Kansas Medical Center, our outstanding faculty offer state-of-the-art educational experiences to ensure students are prepared to practice in a variety of settings now, and into the future. In fact, students are encouraged to help shape their future by participate in nursing research, even as undergraduates.
Our close ties with the University of Kansas Health System mean KU nursing students have the opportunity to experience the highest levels of clinical care, including trauma, cardiovascular, oncology, and transplant. And our relationship with Children’s Mercy Hospital gives students deep experiences in pediatrics. Students also receive valuable interprofessional simulation experiences in the Zamierowski Institute for Experiential Learning (ZIEL) and in the School of Nursing simulation laboratory.
We offer a variety bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and post-doctoral programs that are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and approved by the Kansas State Board of Nursing.
We have two campuses—Kansas City and Salina—and we partner with eight community colleges to provide additional educational opportunities for students who choose to remain in their home community while pursuing a bachelor's degree. We have been a National League for Nursing Center of Excellence in Nursing Education in three consecutive periods, 2012-2027.
KU nurse scientists conduct precision health research that explores health promotion, disease prevention and treatments that encompass genes, environments, and lifestyles. Our nursing faculty have external funding from National Institutes of Health (NIH), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), as well as numerous foundations.
Our school is also home to the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center, a statewide initiative to ensure that Kansans have access to nurses when and where they are needed and that nurses are supported as individuals and as part of the health care team. Taking a data-centered approach, the Center regularly convenes stakeholders to collaborate on systemic solutions.
I invite you to visit next time you’re in Kansas City or Salina. We’d love to show you around. Until then, explore our website or catch us on Facebook and LinkedIn.
