Prospective Student Programs

Preparing for a career in medicine? Learn important insights through programming offered by the KU School of Medicine.

The University of Kansas School of Medicine offers information, events and programming that prepare you for a career in medicine and the application process to medical school.

Here's a handy checklist of things you can do before finishing your bachelor's degree to make the transition to medical school more seamless.

  1. Take a Campus Tour. Undergraduate students and college graduates are invited to join us at one or all of our beautiful campuses with a current medical student! After the tour, a member of the admissions office will host an overview and Q & A session for attendees, so come with all your questions!
  2. Look into our premedical programs.
    • Health Sciences Enrichment Institute: This five-week summer experience at KU Medical Center is designed to offer incoming college freshmen and sophomores additional exposure to the health sciences.
    • Preadmissions Program: This five-week summer program for college juniors and seniors helps you prepare to take the Medical College Application Test (MCAT) and apply to medical school.
    • KU School of Medicine Premedical Student Conference: Kansas physicians, scientists, advisors, and potential medical students come together for this one-day conference. Discussions include the MCAT and applying to medical school, tips for successful admissions interviews and question-and-answer sessions with physicians and medical students.
    • KU School of Medicine Primary Care Workshop: In this one-day workshop, students will participate in a physician-led Problem-Based Learning (PBL) group that illustrates a clinical office visit and in breakout sessions that provide individualized learning about suturing and aspects of the physical exam.
    • KU School of Medicine Scholars in Health: The Scholars in Health program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine aims to identify and support undergraduate students from rural and urban Kansas who are interested in pursuing careers as physicians in these communities. During the junior and senior undergraduate years, program participants will earn 100 hours of shadowing under an assigned mentor in a rural or urban setting (ideally near the participant’s home base). Upon successful completion of program requirements and KU School of Medicine requirements, Scholars in Health program participants receive guaranteed admission to the next entering medical class after undergraduate graduation.
  3. Join an Event for Premedical Students. The University of Kansas School of Medicine Office of Admissions hosts robust offerings of Premedical & Outreach Programs for premedical undergraduate students and college graduates to explore our campuses, interact with students and faculty, and learn how to prepare to be a successful medical school applicant and medical student through our MD Program Open House, Campus Tours, Jayhawk Doc 105, JayhawkMD Webinars, and Virtual Office Hours.
