Dr. Daniel K. Roberts, the first chair of the KU School of Medicine-Wichita Obstetrics & Gynecology Program, emphasized the importance of conducting research and promoting scholarly activity. Reminders of Dr. Roberts' commitment to research and women's health can be seen in the establishment of the Roberts Distinguished Professorship Fund, the Daniel K. Roberts Society, the Daniel K. Roberts OB-GYN Update Symposium, the Daniel K. Roberts Medical Student Award for Excellence in Women's Health Care and the Daniel K. Roberts Center for Research (located at KUSM-W). The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Review Committee (RRC) also expect research and scholarly activities from faculty and resident physicians.

As such, all resident physicians in the obstetrics & gynecology program are required to complete at least one research project, and engage in quality improvement projects during their training. Projects typically address clinical issues that are relevant to practice-based learning and improvement.

The completed research project must be of publishable quality. Residents summarize their findings in a manuscript and often present their results and conclusions at the annual The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita Research Forum. Many resident projects have been selected for presentation at regional or national meetings, and some of these have won prizes. Residents may join one of several ongoing grant-funded projects or choose to investigate a new topic based on the research questions that are constantly being generated at the bedside or in journal club.

Quality improvement projects can be completed yearly and can address topics such department function, medical student education, patient safety, compliance, simulations and clinic processes.

We assist residents who are interested in fellowship training to complete one or more scholarly projects and publish or present the findings regionally or nationally in time to list these accomplishments on their fellowship applications.

Research, quality improvement and simulation support is provided by Jennifer Keomany, MPH, research associate for the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
