Breast Imaging Fellowship

About the Program

The Department of Radiology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, in conjunction with the University of Kansas Hospital, is pleased to offer a one-year fellowship in Breast Imaging at the NCI-designated University of Kansas Cancer Center. The University of Kansas Hospital has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as the “Best Hospital in Kansas” and ranked in the Top 50 Hospitals for Cancer Care for the last 11 years.

The program follows the guidelines of the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI). Fellows receive training in digital tomosynthesis screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, handheld and automated screening breast ultrasound (ABUS), breast MRI (including abbreviated and accelerated techniques) and contrast-enhanced mammography.

Fellows receive broad procedural exposure to:

  • Core and vacuum-assisted biopsies with ultrasound, stereotactic/tomosynthesis and MRI-guidance
  • Axillary node sampling with core technique
  • Ultrasound and mammography-guided preoperative radioactive seed localization
  • Ultrasound-guided cyst, abscess, and seroma aspiration and drain placement

Our fellows have ample volume for developing expertise in subspecialty skills. Our breast center performs over 42,000 breast imaging studies per year, including approximately 2600 interventional procedures.

Fellows have multidisciplinary involvement in weekly breast cancer conferences and concordance conferences for discussion of benign breast biopsies with upgrade potential (atypia, papilloma). These conferences provide a wealth of opportunities for the fellow to be proficient in pathology concordance, management of breast biopsy results and multidisciplinary breast cancer care.

Participation in research is optional, and if desired is supported with assistance from our KU radiology research team. Protected academic time is available to pursue academic endeavors for the motivated individual. Week-long rotations in breast pathology, medical, surgical and radiation oncology enhance our fellow's clinical acumen of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

There are no weeknight or weekend call responsibilities. A stipend of $1500 is available to use on educational expenses, including additional funds for national conference attendance if accepted as first author on an abstract or presentation.
