Proton Therapy

Proton therapy is the most technologically advanced form of targeted radiation treatment that uses protons instead of photons to attack cancerous tumors.

Patient Care

The power and precision of this lifesaving therapy are provided through The University of Kansas Cancer Center, the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. Patients or referring physicians interested in learning about proton therapy options should visit The University of Kansas Cancer Center.

Education

The arrival of proton therapy on our academic medical center campus provides our medical and physics residents an opportunity to participate in hands-on and didactics. Training is overseen by physicians and physicists who have trained and worked at pre-eminent academic medical centers that offer proton therapy mentorship. KU Medical Center uses a team-oriented approach to ensure interdisciplinary training and a variety of learning options. The breadth of the training programs includes exposure to quality improvements, patient safety, financial planning, diversity, collegiality and a host of other activities coordinated to prepare medical and physics residents to enter the professional world.

Research

KU Medical Center has a strong cadre of basic research scientists and translational physician-scientists who will conduct proton therapy research via a variety of research methodologies including registries, clinical trials and investigator-initiated trials designed to push the intellectual envelope. Students will learn research techniques, be mentored and complete projects, and participate in the completion of posters, presentations, abstracts and publications that strengthen their long-time contributions to their respective fields. Medical and physics residents will be able to self-design their research acumen via collaboration with faculty and completion of self-study projects.
