Post-Sophomore Fellowship (PSF)
Program Description
The Post-Sophomore Fellowship (PSF) at the University of Kansas Medical Center is an excellent opportunity for medical students to gain clinical and research experience in pathology. Open to medical students after their second or third year of medical school, the program provides:
- Hands-on experience with attending physicians and residents/fellows on:
- Gross and microscopic diagnoses
- Intra-operative consultations (frozen sections)
- Clinical pathology consultations
- First-year pathology resident equivalent responsibilities and education
- Departmental and subspecialty educational conferences and tumor boards
- Exposure to the field that accounts for 70% of medical records
- Option to conduct research projects with faculty
- Terrific addition to any residency application

Program Structure and Duration
This is a 12-month fellowship typically starting July 1 and ending June of the following year. PSFs rotate in the following pathology specialty areas:
- Surgical Pathology
- Cytopathology
- Hematopathology
- Neuropathology
- Dermatopathology
- Clinical Microbiology
- Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine
- Autopsy
- Electives tailored to PSF interest
Stipend and Benefits
PSFs are provided an annual stipend while maintaining student status:
- Annual stipend
- Travel and book allowance
- Meal stipend
- Parking permit
- Maintain student loan deferment status
Application Process
Eligibility
Must be current second- or third-year medical student currently enrolled in an LCME- or COCA-accredited medical school.

- Two (2) Letters of Recommendation will need to be emailed from the letter writer directly to pathologyresidents@kumc.edu. Please address Letters of Recommendation to the PSF Director, Anders Meyer, M.D..
Application Timeline
Applications are accepted in the fall/winter of each academic year prior to the assignment. Final decisions on candidates will be made by the end of March each year.
Applications are now closed for the 2026-2027 academic year.
