Outreach

Outside of an emergency room in a foreign country

Beginning in the 1990s when Dr. Larry Hoover took residents to Nepal and Kyrgyzstan, our department has continued to support faculty and resident participation.

In 2004, the Department co-founded a medical service for Antigua, Guatemala; since then, the service trip has become an annual tradition involving over 70 participants, and completing over 80 surgeries and 600 patient visits over the six days of the trip.

The Department aims for all willing residents to participate in a medical service trip during residency training, with the hope that they will continue to be involved after graduation. In recent years, residents have participated in service trips to Guatemala, Uganda, India and the Philippines.
