Facilities
Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Physical Activity and Weight Management (DPAWM)
The DPAWM maintains 3 research facilities on the KUMC campus and 2 research facilities on the campus of the University of Kansas-Lawrence (KU-L). Thus, participant recruitment and interventions can be conducted in both Greater Kansas City and Lawrence. Please note all DPAWM facilities are part of the recently awarded KC-MORE COBRE (Kansas Center for Metabolism and Obesity Research (NIH1P20GM144269-01) and share personnel. All outcome testing and exercise training equipment are similar across our research facilities and all areas of all facilities are accessible to people with disabilities.

KUMC: Kirmayer
Research and Clinical Weight Management programs are located in a separate area of Kirmayer Fitness Center and occupies 5,500 sq. ft.
This facility includes: a participant waiting room, staff offices and workstations, 6 exam rooms, 2 consultation rooms, a conference room with audiovisual capabilities, a DXA scanner, a room for the assessment of resting energy expenditure and maximal aerobic capacity using indirect calorimetry, a biochemistry area for processing blood and tissue samples, centrifuge, a minus 80 freezer, a kitchen, and an exercise room for conducting supervised aerobic training and/or testing, functional fitness or strength, and a remote exercise delivery studio.
KUMC: Endowment
Research personnel office space is located in the Endowment Building adjacent to the Kirmayer facility. This space includes 4 individual offices, and 4 large cubicle areas with 8 workstations, a small kitchen, and a conference room.
KUMC: Fairway
Located 1.2 miles from the main KUMC campus is a 20,000 ft sq research laboratory with exercise testing and training facilities. Fairway contains offices, exam rooms, controlled exercise training area, locker rooms with showers, laboratory and exam rooms, and dedicated procedure rooms.
KU-L: On-Campus Energy Balance Laboratory (Robinson Center)
This 10,000 sq. ft., state-of-the art research laboratory contains 2 floors of exercise testing and training facilities. The first floor includes the following: a large reception area for participant registration and intake procedures, an office, 5 exam rooms with sinks and storage cabinets, which are used for DXA scans, the assessment of resting energy expenditure and maximal aerobic capacity using indirect calorimetry, portable indirect calorimetry, anthropometry, biochemistry laboratory for processing blood and tissue samples, a minus 80 freezer, and an exercise room for conducting supervised aerobic or resistance exercise with adjacent handicap accessible locker rooms for both men and women, and extensive audio and video entertainment packages to facilitate participant compliance.
Exercise equipment includes treadmills, elliptical trainers, steppers, stationary bicycles, and both upper and lower body resistance exercise machines. Additionally, it is equipped for high intensity functional training activities (squat racks, pull-up bars, ski ergometers, medicine balls, ropes, etc.) similar to the KUMC Fairway facility. The second floor includes: 6 faculty/staff offices, an office for doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows, visiting scholars, etc., a whole-room indirect calorimeter, a metabolic teaching kitchen, and a room dedicated to data entry and processing.
The whole-room calorimeter which occupies ~450 sq. ft., is completely automated and interfaced with a PC workstation for real-time data collection. A dormitory room, equipped with a bed, toilet, shower, and entertainment center for overnight stays prior to calorimeter assessments is located adjacent to the calorimeter. The metabolic kitchen, which contains multiple stove/oven and microwave units, counter space, freezers, and refrigerators, will be used for the cooking skill classes. Additional storage space is available in various areas of the Energy Balance Lab.
KU-L: Off-Campus Clinical Research Facility (Wakarusa)
This ~3,500 sq. ft. facility is located 1.5 miles west of the main KU-L campus. It has dedicated at-the-door parking which is important for out-patient research and our clinical weight management program offered to Lawrence and surrounding communities.
This facility includes a large reception area, 5 staff offices, 3 exam rooms, 3 meeting rooms for group/individual behavioral sessions, a kitchen for food preparation, several storage rooms and an exercise room with the same aerobic and resistance training equipment as previously described for the Energy Balance Lab and KUMC facilities with accessible lockers and showers.
This facility also houses the administrative offices for the University of Kansas Weight Management Program.
