How to Apply

Ready to apply to KU's doctorate program in physical therapy? Here are the steps you'll follow.

Tips for Prospective Applicants

KU's doctorate program in physical therapy has a competitive admissions process, as we receive more applications than spots available in the next class. That said, we encourage all eligible students to apply.

Here are four key tips to help strengthen your application:

  1. Apply, even if you're unsure.
Admission is based on a holistic review process. No single part of the application is weighted more heavily than others. The average cumulative undergraduate GPA for accepted students typically falls between 3.5 and 3.8 on a 4.0 scale, but these are averages— not minimums. We’ve admitted students with GPAs below 3.5, and not admitted students with a 4.0.

  2. Submit strong letters of recommendation.
We require three letters, and one must be from a licensed physical therapist. Choose recommenders who can speak to your academic ability, character and potential to contribute to our program and the field. PTCAS allows up to five letters, and if you submit more than three, we will review all of them.

  3. Use every opportunity to tell your story.
We do not conduct interviews, so your PTCAS application is your one chance to show us who you are. Don’t leave any section blank. Be sure to include details about the following:
    • Community service
    • Awards and scholarships
    • Research experience
    • Clubs and organizations
    • Leadership roles
    • Work experience (PT-related or not)
    • Certifications or additional training

  4. Apply broadly.
Admission to any physical therapy program is a competitive process. We encourage you to apply to any program you are willing to attend. Expanding your options increases your chances of finding the right fit.

Application Steps

  1. Complete the online application through the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS) at ptcas.org. Please submit all required materials directly to PTCAS and your application will be forwarded to the programs you designate. You will be asked to indicate whether you would like to apply to the on-campus pathway only, hybrid pathway only, or both pathways on your KU application. You DO NOT need to complete a second PTCAS application if you would like to be considered for both pathways.
  2. Once your PTCAS application reaches “Verified” status, you will receive an email requesting payment of the $75.00 supplemental KU application fee. This fee is non-refundable.
  3. If you're accepted into the program without official transcripts at the time of application, final official transcripts for your undergraduate degree will be required to be sent from your institution directly to KU. Note: students receiving their undergraduate degree from KU are not required to submit final official transcripts.
