The University of Kansas was established by the citizens of the state of Kansas to provide a distinguished institution of higher learning for its people. KU has established a reputation for excellence in academics, research and service to the people of the state—attributes that depend directly upon the quality of KU's faculty and staff.
The dedicated academic and clinical faculty of the school participate actively in their own governance. The most fundamental policies and procedures of this system of governance are laid out in the school's bylaws (PDF). As mandated by the bylaws, faculty are represented by elected and appointed members the school's standing faculty committees.
These committees meet regularly and serve to address various school interests and needs, from faculty tenure and promotion, to diversity concerns, to committee oversight and elections.
This committee serves to monitor curricular development and strategic academic initiatives, to periodically review department policies on academic appeals by students, to participate in student grievance hearings, and to align the school’s bylaws, committee policies and procedures, and the school’s strategic plan.
This committee's members are appointed by each department of the school. The committee reviews applications from current faculty for promotion and/or tenure, makes recommendations to the dean. They also review new faculty joining KU at the levels of assistant, associate, or full professor and appointments involving the tenure-track. Learn more
Facilitates understanding and acceptance of persons with diverse abilities, cultures and ethnicities within the KU School of Health Professions and the greater community through support and education.
The committee's mission is to celebrate, highlight and promote the values of diverse cultures and unique perspectives among the school's students, staff and faculty by creating an inclusive community where shared communication, awareness, acceptance and mutual respect are enhanced through cultural enrichment.

This committee is responsible for conducting faculty nominations for school committees and managing the ballots used for elections.
This committee works in partnership with all schools on campus and with other entities and agencies to promote excellence in patient care delivery, to make recommendations pertaining to faculty practice issues when appropriate, review models for faculty practice implementation, and to suggest methods for marketing and increasing visibility and revenue for faculty practice. Faculty voted in spring 2020 to change the bylaws to reflect the new composition of the committee as consisting of faculty only from the School of Health Professions. One member shall be appointed from each of the school's eight departments. Previously, faculty from the School of Nursing also participated on this committee, with three faculty representing each school.
The school's research committee aims to promote and expand excellence in scholarly pursuits, especially research. The committee communicates research-related issues between faculty and administration, advises on research program policies, assists in planning/implementing new programs, and considers applications for research funding by school-related agencies
The professional development committee helps to coordinate professional development activities for students and faculty in the School of Health Professions. This committee first organized during the 2002-2003 year, as the student affairs committee and the faculty development committee were disbanded.

This committee’s membership includes elected faculty and the chairs of each of the other school committees. Duties include coordinating faculty governance within the school, calling and conducting faculty meetings for the entire school, supporting the onboarding process for new faculty, appoint ac hoc grievance committee for faculty at the dean’s request, and facilitate communication among committees and other governance groups on campus.
