History

The Hoglund Biomedical Imaging Center was dedicated March 23, 2003, as the Hoglund Brain Imaging Center. The Hoglund Biomedical Imaging Center was established through a generous gift of $4 million from Forrest and Sally Hoglund to the University of Kansas Medical Center as part of their kick-off contribution to the "KU First" Capital Campaign. The university leveraged this support to obtain approximately $3 million in federal funding and $3 million from the state of Kansas to support initial equipment purchases and operational costs.

After considerable planning, the construction of the Hoglund Biomedical Imaging Center began with a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 10, 2001. At that time, Forrest Hoglund challenged the university and construction team to complete the task in one year. he overall enthusiasm for the project is reflected by the fact that the first personnel (Director - William Brooks, Ph.D., and former Director of Magnetoencephalography - Jeffrey Lewine, Ph.D.) occupied offices in December 2002. The center opened its doors in 2003 with a faculty of four. Since then, team has expanded to over 25 faculty and staff. The HBIC also has been an influential factor in local hirings of more than 20 other faculty at KUMC and in the region. Accordingly, there is an increasing base of imaging researchers who are taking advantage of the advanced biomedical imaging opportunity presented at the HBIC. This team contributes not only to the productivity of the HBIC, but also to the current and future grant-getting capability of the center and institution.
