Professional Background

Laurie Steen, OTD, OTR/L, CEAS I, CLT-LANA, is a clinical instructor in the Department of Occupational Therapy Education at the University of Kansas Medical Center. A 2001 KU alumnae, her clinical background as an occupational therapist includes specialty certifications in ergonomics and lymphedema.

For the entry-level doctorate in occupational therapy, Steen brings nearly 20 years of experience in clinical practice working with adults in the KC Metro Area in areas of acute care and outpatient rehabilitation.

Steen's focus is to assist students in applying their foundational knowledge into integrated clinical practice experiences. She is faculty supervisor for KU students providing pro-bono services at the JaySTART outpatient clinic. She also conducts driving evaluations for the Driving and Mobility Services Clinic at KU Medical Center.

From 2005 to 2020, Steen was a full-time staff occupational therapist in the rehabilitation department of Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. As coordinator of the outpatient department, she managed multidisciplinary teams of staff and provided patient care including evaluation and treatment of patients with acute and chronic upper extremity injuries, neurological impairments, general debility, and lymphedema.

Steen is an active member in several professional organizations including the Kansas Occupational Therapy Association, American Occupational Therapy Association, National Lymphedema Network, and Kansas Coalition of Lymphedema Therapists.
