Professional Background

JoAnn Peterson, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, WHNP-C, is a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Coordinator of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program. Dr. Peterson has practiced as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and a Family Nurse Practitioner for 29 years and was a bedside nurse for 10 years before furthering her education. Dr. Peterson has been with the School of Nursing for 15 years. Throughout her career in advanced practice nursing, Dr. Peterson has been a clinical preceptor for many nurse practitioner, medical, and pharmacy students.

Dr. Peterson’s practice focus is providing comprehensive health care to underserved populations. Throughout the years she has been involved in many state and local initiatives related to access to quality health care for the uninsured and underserved populations. Dr. Peterson received her BSN from Kansas Newman University, an MSN from Graceland University, and her DNP from the University of Kansas. She received a certificate in women’s health care from the University of Texas at Dallas.

Research

Overview

Dr. Peterson has led quality improvement teams over her years of practice and teaching. Recently, she was directly involved in initiating an Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) screening in a safety net and has gone on to assist in developing strategies for providers to use to facilitate patient conversations when talking about ACEs. The quality improvement initiatives Dr. Peterson has participated in have led to improved care of patients and improved patient outcomes in medically underserved populations.
