Professional Background
Dr. Ortiz is a board-certified psychiatrist who completed his residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2024 and earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2020. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences from the University of Kansas School of Health Professions. He currently serves as Clinical Assistant Professor for the Consultation/Liaison service as well as Associate Program Director for the Psychiatry Residency Program. His interests include psychotic disorders, neuropsychiatric conditions, neuroimaging, cognitive therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and dimensional approaches to personality disorder management.
His professional experiences span multiple clinical educational roles, having served as laboratory director to JayDoc, the student free health clinic affiliated with the School of Medicine, instructed undergraduate pre-medical students through the Health Sciences Enrichment Institute, and served as facilitator for the School of Medicine's pre-matriculation program. During residency, he served as the Vice President of Education on the residency council and worked with the council to advocate on behalf of residents training at the hospital.
He has been recognized for his accomplishments within the medical community, having received the Shawn M. Storm Award, Donald W. Goodwin Award, and Patricia A. Thomas Award during his tenure with the University of Kansas. His community services have included over a decade of involvement with the JayDoc Student-Run Free Health Clinic and previously assisting with training students through Heart to Heart International. During medical school he advocated with fellow classmates for the passage of SB32, a state bill that allocated funds for medical students wanting to practice psychiatry in underserved areas of Kansas.
He currently is licensed through both the Kansas and Missouri Board of Healing Arts as a physician and is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Ortiz has also held certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.
In addition to his medical expertise, he practices conversational Spanish and has foundational knowledge of Russian. He hobbies include a passion for multiple fine arts, including music composition and performance, audio engineering, graphic design, and photography, and also builds and assembles computers in his spare time.
Dr. Ortiz is committed to delivering compassionate psychiatric care, advocating for community mental health, advancing medical education, and continuing to advocate for patients in need.
