Interprofessional Development

The KU Area Health Education Center and KU Medical Center Continuing Education and Professional Development are committed to promoting a team-based approach to patient care.

A team-based approach to patient care and education

No patient is cared for by only one health care discipline. Patient care is a collaborative effort across multiple disciplines. Interprofessional development brings the opportunity to provide continuing education content for all the health care professionals involved in caring for a patient in a team-based environment. Learning as a team and working as a team leads to improved health care delivery and better patient outcomes.

For the team, by the team

Best practices in health care emphasize a team-based approach to patient care. By beginning with the mindset of interprofessional education, we can provide high-quality accredited educational opportunities for the entire team in one place. This approach increases operational efficiency, which saves time, money and resources.

Interprofessional education and team-based care are critical components of health care improvement. Interprofessional development helps ensure education opportunities are informed by the health care team, for the health care team. This opens the door for health care professionals to learn with, from and about each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.

Changing the way continuing education planning is done

Planning our programs through the lens of interprofessional education challenges us to bring more diverse voices to the planning process and promotes the development of cohesive health care teams. The biggest change our partners can expect to see is that all the health care disciplines involved in treating a patient should be represented at the table when planning a program.
