KEE Program Eligibility

The KEE system provides opportunities for visitors ranging from high school and college students to working professionals

The system offers noncurricular educational experiences that supplement a variety of programs already in place at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Non-KUMC Medical Students

In order to prioritize the needs of our KU Medical Center medical students, applications from external medical students will be accepted only after KU Medical Center students have been placed. This would be for summer only (May - July) and by physician or researcher invitation only (no placements will be provided by the KEE System).

Research Learners - approved summer experiences will be allowed for May-July. The application can be found on the KEE website. Sponsor name and email are required at the time of application.

Clinical Learners – approved summer experiences will be allowed for June and July.  Please contact the Clinical Observational Experience Coordinator (Kayla Koenig) for more information on applying.

Students seeking 4th year elective VSLO opportunities should contact the School of Medicine directly.

KEE Research Experiences

For Academic Credit
  • High school students at least 16 years of age seeking an educational experience as either an observer or active learner in a University of Kansas Medical Center laboratory, research area, or animal facility are eligible for the KEE system.
  • Students participating in rotations carried out for academic credit or to meet the program requirements of another institution require a written affiliation agreement between the University of Kansas Medical Center and the individual's home educational institution. The Office of General Counsel must approve all such agreements and they must comply with the applicable policies of the KU school hosting the rotation or practicum experience. Please contact tgilmore4@kumc.edu for more details.

Working Professionals

  • Visiting working professionals are eligible to participate in KEE research experiences.

Those Ineligible for KEE Research Experiences (still welcome, but enter through sources other than KEE)

  • University of Kansas Medical Center students and employees do not need to go through KEE; instead, they coordinate with the sponsoring department.
  • Visitors from other medical schools (see policy update above) approved for senior electives through the Association of American Medical Colleges Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) can participate in research experiences at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Contact the School of Medicine Dean's Office with questions.
  • Foreign nationals (visitors who are not U.S. Citizens, permanent residents or DACA students) must contact the Office of International Programs to discover what educational experiences are available.
  • Visiting faculty who have received a visiting faculty appointment through the Office of Faculty Affairs.
  • Researchers visiting the University of Kansas Medical Center to engage in research collaboration.

KEE Clinical Observational Experiences

High School Students
  • High school students who would like to observe in a clinical setting must be at least 16 years of age.
  • High school students cannot observe in emergency departments, operating rooms or any other areas identified by unit management.

Physicians

  • Visiting physicians should coordinate their clinical observational experience directly with their sponsoring department. The Clinical Observational Experiences Coordinator will help the physician complete their required KEE system documentation and paperwork, verify sponsorship, facilitate the badging appointment, and retain the completed paperwork.
  • Visiting scholars: Fully trained physicians who meet the criteria for appointment as a visiting scholar should make their request with the relevant academic department in the School of Medicine. The Office of Faculty Affairs reviews these requests.

All Other Students and Working Professionals

  • Undergraduate students, graduate students, or working professionals are eligible to participate in a clinical observational experience.

Medical Students

  • KU Medical Center medical students are eligible to participate in clinical observational experiences and do not need to go through the KEE application; they merely coordinate with the sponsoring department.
  • Non-KUMC external medical students are eligible and will be accepted only after KU Medical Center students have been placed. This would be for summer only (May – July) and by physician or researcher invitation only (no placements will be provided by the KEE system.)

Nursing Students

  • Nursing students not currently in a KU Medical Center clinical rotation are eligible to participate in the KEE system and should complete the KEE application process.

TUKHS and KUMC Employees

  • Employees of The University of Kansas Health System (TUKHS) who are seeking a personal shadowing opportunity do not need to apply through KEE to shadow. Please coordinate a shadowing experience with your desired department, identify a sponsor, and dates for your shadowing experience. Once all details are determined, please submit a survey via this link: TUKHS Employee Personal Shadows (kumc.edu). Once submitted, you and your sponsor will receive confirmation of your shadowing experience.
  • Employees of The University of Kansas Medical Center are eligible for KEE clinical experiences and should apply through the KEE website.

Those Ineligible for KEE Clinical Observational Experiences

  • Foreign nationals (visitors who are not U.S. citizens, permanent residents or DACA students)
  • Students participating in rotations carried out for academic credit or to meet the program requirements of another institution
    • Students must accomplish these rotations pursuant to a written affiliation agreement between The University of Kansas Health System and the individual's home educational institution.
    • Graduate Advanced Practice Provider students, including APRN and physician assistants, do not go through the KEE system for clinical placement.
