What is this emergency grant program?

Through the American Rescue Plan, the U.S. Congress provided HEERF III money to colleges and universities for emergency student grants. The purpose of the money is to award emergency financial aid grants to students for expenses that are due to the coronavirus. To learn about the amount of money that the University of Kansas received and how funds were disbursed across campuses, visit the University of Kansas CARES Act page. 

The following is a list of expenses that can be considered for grant assistance:

  • Housing
  • Food
  • Childcare
  • Technology-related expenses
  • Course materials
  • Transportation
  • Healthcare expenses

What situations qualify for HEERF III emergency student grants? 

The purpose of the grant is to assist students who have unexpected, emergency expenses as a result of the coronavirus

Do I need to file a 2021-22 FAFSA?

Schools are required to prioritize recipients with exceptional financial need. Therefore, we are asking students to complete a 2021-22 FAFSA (not 2022-23 FAFSA) to demonstrate that need.

  • Schools may consider students who are ineligible to file a FAFSA (such as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or students attending on a F-1 or F-2 nonimmigrant student visa, or on a J-1 or J-2 nonimmigrant Exchange Visitor Visa).  Please fill out the HEERF III application for student emergency grant evaluation.

How many times can I apply?

Students who applied in spring 2020 and spring 2021 may also apply for the spring 2022 emergency grants. 

Eligibility

Students who meet all the criteria:
  1. Working towards a degree or certificate conferred by KU Medical Center.
    • Students earning their degree or certificate from KU Lawrence may visit the Emergency Aid Network, if they need emergency assistance. 
  2. Enrolled in at least 1 hour in spring 2022 at the time the application is evaluated.
    • All course modalities are eligible (e.g. in-person, online or hybrid).
  3. Schools are required to prioritize recipients with exceptional financial need. Please complete a 2021-22 FAFSA (not 2022-23 FAFSA) to demonstrate that need.
    • Students who are ineligible to file a FAFSA are encouraged to fill out the HEERF III application.  This includes students who are:
      • Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
      • Living in the U.S. on a F-1 or F-2 nonimmigrant student visa, or on a J-1 or J-2 nonimmigrant Exchange Visitor Visa.

The application opens on 2/21/22 and closes at 11:59PM on 3/6/22.

  1. Go to https://ku.academicworks.com (using the button below)
  2. Click the red Sign In button in the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Click the red Sign In With Your KU online ID button.
  4. Click the red and blue KU Medical Center KUMC Login button
  5. Under Opportunities select the KUMC Emergency Grant
  6. Indicate how much emergency expenses you incurred due to the coronavirus for each category.
  7. Answer all of the questions.  
  8. Click the red Finish and Submit button at the bottom right corner of the page.

 Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Emergency Grant Application

  • Review of all applications begins 3/7/22.
  • Students are notified of the result of application via kumc.edu email account.
  • Deposit funds within 4 weeks of notification of award.

Awarding

How much will I receive?

Schools received a limited amount of HEERF III funds. Schools are required to prioritize students with exceptional financial need. Grant amounts will be determined based on the number of applications received and the specific needs presented in the application. KU Medical Center cannot guarantee that all applications submitted will receive funding and/or that students will receive the full amount of funding requested.

When will we know the results?

Applications will be reviewed starting on March 7. Student Financial Aid will email all applicants with the results of their application. Please monitor your kumc.edu email account.

How do students receive the money?

Emergency grants will be processed through student accounts. Emergency grants will be directly deposited into bank accounts for students who are enrolled in direct deposit. (For the fastest refund, please sign up for direct deposit.) 

Students without direct deposit will receive a refund check in the mail.  Please ensure your Jayhawk address is accurate (https://sa.ku.edu > Personal Details > Addresses). Funds not deposited within 4 weeks of award notification may be canceled and unable to be reinstated.

What if I owe KU Medical Center for tuition or other expenses?

The full amount of the emergency grants will be given directly to the student, and will not pay outstanding balances owed to KU Medical Center. Any outstanding balance owed to KU Medical Center will remain the responsibility of the student.

Are the Emergency Grants taxable?

No. The Internal Revenue Service has released a FAQ document, and Question #2 indicates that funds are not includible in a student’s gross income for federal income taxes. Please visit the FAQ for additional tax guidance.
