International Travel Advisories

The Office of International Programs provides guidance on important Department of State and CDC travel warnings, along with other travel-related safety information. Register all international educational experiences.

International Travel/Education Abroad Policy Statement

Because of the complexities of international travel and the need to be aware of Department of State and CDC travel warnings and other pertinent safety information, it is required that all student international educational experiences be registered with and approved by the Office of International Programs.

To provide logistical and safety support for all members of the KU Medical Center community, faculty, residents, or staff members participating in an international professional experience as a representative of KU Medical Center must register with the Office of International Programs in advance of travel.

Travel Advisory Information

The quality of the educational and professional experiences and the safety of students, faculty and staff are the first priorities of the University of Kansas Medical Center.

To keep our students, faculty and staff safe, KU Medical Center does not uniformly support international educational or professional experiences to high-risk areas identified by a U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Level 3 or 4 or a CDC Travel Alert Level 3. However, should an individual still desire a professional or educational experience in a high-risk area, he/she may petition for an exception to this policy.

Mobile Passport Control - Start the U.S. Entry Process from Your Smart Phone

Mobile Passport Control is a free app that U.S. citizens and Canadian visitors can use to expedite their entry into the United States. This is the first app authorized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and enables travelers to create a profile with their passport information and pre-answer the CBP inspection-related questions. See the full list of participating international airports and check out Travisa for any of your other visa and passport-related needs.

Travel Advisories

Effective Nov. 21, 2020: The CDC has developed a COVID-specific travel notice system better aligned with the Levels 1-4 travel advisory system in use by the U.S. Department of State. The new risk assessment levels for COVID-19 were posted online on Friday, Nov. 21, 2020, and are as follows:

Level 2: COVID-19 Moderate

Travelers at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 should avoid all nonessential travel to these destinations.

Level 1: COVID-19 Low

All travelers should wear a mask, stay at least six feet from people who are not from their household, wash their hands often or use hand sanitizer, and watch their health for signs of illness.

How Travel Levels are Determined

Due to the global pandemic and incidence in the U.S., the CDC has also significantly updated the metrics by which a country can be escalated or de-escalated through the COVID-specific travel notice levels. See https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/how-level-is-determined.html for comprehensive information.

CDC Guidance & Requirements on Air Travel During Covid

The CDC has also issued guidance on testing and international travel. See https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-air-travel.html for more information.
