Halsey Infectious Disease & Tropical Medicine Training Award

The Halsey Infectious Disease & Tropical Medicine Training Award encourages physician scientists to obtain a unique international medical experience and to consider a career in this important field.

The Halsey Infectious Disease & Tropical Medicine Training Award provides support to cover travel and lodging expenses for a fourth-year medical student participating in an International Educational Experience in the area of infectious disease and/or tropical medicine. Priority will be given to an applicant completing the International Educational Experience in Africa or South America.

With this award, we hope to encourage and help young physician scientists to obtain a unique international medical experience and to consider a career in this important field of medicine.

In 1998, Eric S. Halsey, M.D., while a fourth-year medical student, enrolled in the KU Medical Center International Elective. With the help of a scholarship from KU Medical Center, he was able to participate in an overseas tropical medicine elective offered at Kenyatta Hospital and Nairobi Hospital in Kenya.

The four-week clinical experience introduced Eric not only to another side of the world but also to the world of tropical diseases. Since that time, Eric has spent much of his professional life fighting tropical infectious diseases–ranging from dengue fever to Ebola to malaria–in North America, South America and Africa.

He fondly considers his elective in Kenya as the most influential four weeks of his academic and professional life and would like to ensure other fourth-year medical students have the same opportunity he had.

Eligibility

Medical students currently in their third year can apply for the award to be used for a fourth-year International Clinical Elective Rotation.

"I was able to do a clinical rotation at the Cayetano National Hospital in Lima, Peru, in Feb. 2020. Overall, it was an eye-opening experience that solidified my interest in infectious disease and global health. Similar to Dr. Eric Halsey's international educational experience in the past, this rotation was among the most profound and impactful and will continue to inspire me throughout my career."
